Amazon has announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire DuckLabs, the Amsterdam-based company behind the open source analytical database DuckDB. We expect the transaction to close shortly, subject to customary closing conditions.
AWS and DuckLabs have worked together since 2024. The DuckLabs team brings world-class database engineering expertise and a track record of building software that developers love. Together, we'll make AWS analytics faster, simpler, and more cost-effective for customers.
When the transaction closes, the talented DuckLabs team, based in Amsterdam, will join AWS. Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt, who created DuckDB and co-founded DuckLabs, will continue leading the team and the open source project's technical direction. We are not acquiring the DuckDB open source project, which will remain free and open source under the independent DuckDB Foundation (the non-profit that oversees DuckDB) and available under the MIT license as it does today. "We’ve been working closely with the DuckLabs team for the past two years, and I am so excited at the opportunity to work with them even more closely."
We expect to close this transaction soon. Afterward, we'll share more about how we plan to bring the best of DuckLabs and AWS together for customers. In the meantime, nothing changes for DuckDB users.
